History
Infant Jesus Church, located on Nikape Road, has a rich and inspiring history rooted in generosity and
faith. The land on which the church stands was graciously donated by Ms. Jane Grace de Zilwa. Originally
named Friendship House, the church began its journey on April 8, 1963, with the official transfer of the
land to the Archdiocese through probate.
In its early days, Friendship House became a place of spiritual gathering, with Holy Mass celebrated
every Saturday. These regular services played a pivotal role in uniting the local community in prayer,
offering comfort and spiritual nourishment.
The Sunday School in Nedimala began in 1984 under the shade of a large Jack tree — a humble yet
meaningful start to what would become a vital part of the church’s mission. On December 3, 1987, the
church was officially inaugurated and renamed Jesu Medura, signifying a new chapter in its spiritual
journey.
The year 1998 stands out as a time of transformation and divine grace for the Nedimala church. On April
17, Rev. Fr. Kennedy introduced the Novena to the Infant Jesus. This was followed by two momentous
occasions: the consecration of the church on August 23 and the opening of its iconic belfry on August 30.
In 1999, the foundation stone for the Samera Memorial Building was blessed, and the building was
officially opened in 2002. This dedicated space became a new home for Sunday School, offering the
children of the Nedimala community a nurturing environment to grow in faith and understanding of
Christ.
In 2003, a beautifully crafted Grotto dedicated to Mother Mary was blessed — a meaningful addition
that continues to hold deep significance for parishioners.
August 2004 marked another milestone with the first-ever procession of the Infant Jesus statue through
the streets, a tradition that has since become a cherished event in the church calendar.
The Novena services, held every Friday, grew in popularity. In 2008, Rev. Fr. Lakpriya Nonis introduced
Benediction on the first Friday before the Novena and Mass. The positive response from the
congregation led to Benediction being held every Friday.
On July 31, 2010, a prominent statue of the Infant Jesus was unveiled near the belfry, facing the road—a
silent but powerful symbol of the church’s unwavering faith, welcoming all who pass by.
In January 2012, Rev. Fr. Prasanna Christopher introduced a Sinhala Mass on the third Saturday of each
month, catering to the diverse spiritual needs of the community.
2016 saw another important milestone: the church’s first-ever Carol Service, graciously introduced by
Rev. Fr. Bonnie Fernandopulle and Rev. Fr. Prsanka Rodrigo. Presented in the cherished format of Nine
Lessons and Carols, this event brought added joy and festive spirit to the congregation during the
Christmas season.
The year 2023 marked two significant anniversaries: the Silver Jubilee of the church’s dedication to the
Infant Jesus and the 60th anniversary of its establishment. These celebrations were a powerful
testament to the enduring faith, growth, and unity of the Nedimala community.
Today, Infant Jesus Church continues to flourish — a beacon of faith, love, and devotion for generations
to come.
